New Appointments & Other Rankings
- Founder and Consultant Dato’ Jude Benny and John Sze have been appointed to the panel of arbitrators at The Beihai Asia International Arbitration Centre (BAIAC). The organization handles disputes between China and the ASEAN region.
As of 1 January 2020, Managing Partner K Murali Pany and John Sze have been appointed to the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre (FIDReC) panel of adjudicators.
FIDReC is a not-for-profit company that aims to provide affordable dispute resolution services to the public when they have issues with financial institutions. The centre has been successful in resolving 1,218 complaints in this fiscal year (until 30th June), with 85% of the cases reaching resolution through either mediation or adjudication.

In the third quarter of 2019, three of JTJB Singapore’s Partners – K Murali Pany, John Sze and Danny Chua were ranked in Singapore’s Top 100 Lawyer’s 2019. Mirroring that, JTJB Thailand’s Managing Director Naiyachon Tathong has just been recognized by Asia Business Law Journal as one of the Top 100 Lawyers in Thailand.

Teatime Seminar on the ICC Incoterms 2020
On 22nd November, John Sze conducted a teatime seminar on the topic of the ICC Incoterms 2020. The Incoterms rules are updated once a decade and the 2020 edition is expected to come into effect on 1 January 2020.
The seminar covered an overview of the aims and purpose of Incoterms, followed by an overview of the changes, and lastly, a case study of practical issues that arise from the use of Incoterms.
Further to this, Mr Sze also conducted two more in-house seminars for two major international trading companies in Singapore and Bangkok. Our audience comprised of a range of industries and company sizes. The audience members were keen to learn about and be prepared for Incoterms 2020 as it will affect their companies’ transactions directly.
International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) Annual Convention 2019
JTJB Senior Partner Danny Chua was invited to speak at the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) Annual Convention 2019, which was held in Istanbul, Turkey from 22-24 October 2019. Mr Chua, who is part of the Executive Committee of IBIA Asia Branch, discussed the commercial and legal aspects of the MARPOL Annex VI amendments which are coming into effect on 1 January 2020 (also known as the IMO 2020 Sulphur Cap). In particular, he outlined the new requirements for vessels calling into Singapore, as well as highlighted the legal issues to consider and allocation of obligations in time and voyage charterparties.
12th IKMAL-SNI Joint Forum 2019
This one-day event in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, held on 12th November was focused on discussing the best practices in ship-to-ship transfer. The event was a successful collaboration between IKHTISAS KELAUTAN MALAYSIA (IKMAL), or The Association of Malaysia’s Maritime Professionals, and the Singapore Nautical Institution.
K Murali Pany was the Chairman of the first session.
IIMS Marine Surveying International Fest II
This two-day online conference was hosted by the International Institute of Marine Surveying. K Murali Pany spoke on the topics of “A collision case study: implications for surveyors” and “IMO 2020 – potential opportunities for surveyors”.
JTJB Champagne-Tasting 2019
On 4th December, we hosted our traditional wine-tasting event, swapping the usual red and white for champagne given that it is the holiday season.
The imported wines were a hit with our guests. We aim to host another session in the first half of 2020 – look out for your invite!
