JTJB Seminar Updates

Advoc Maritime Seminarno-1

JTJB hosted the 4th ADVOC maritime Seminar on the 11 November 2016 at Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel. JTJB Senior Partner Mr. Danny Chua and Mr. Charles Hattersley of Ashfords LLP spoke about the unique characteristics of Admiralty arrests and anti-suit injunctions in their respective jurisdictions. Captain Hakirat Singh from Maritime Affairs Pte Ltd also addressed the COLREGS and its role in preventing marine casualties. The seminar ended with a Q&A session and panel discussion by the three speakers and Dato Jude Benny, president of ADVOC Asia. The seminar, which ended with a cocktail reception, was attended by P&I clubs, Cargo underwriters, ship owners, charterers and managers.

whatsapp-image-2016-11-16-at-09-01-37On 15 November 2016, our partner, Mr. Baldev Bhinder, from our specialist Energy, Resources & Infrastructure team together with Mr. Lee Wai Pong on behalf of the Singapore Mediation Centre delivered a seminar at Capital Tower on market volatility in the O&G and commodities markets. Baldev adopted practical examples from over a decade advising and representing companies in the sector, he dealt with key risk areas in the supply chain. Baldev illustrated basic problems with identifying contractual terms in the trading business as well as the increasing use of economic circumstances to justify non-performance or a renegotiation of contract terms. The seminar was attended by a variety of companies across the shipping, trading, construction, insurance and finance sectors.

SNI and IKMAL Joint Forum on STS Best Practices, Kuala Lumpuruntitled

JTJB Managing Partner, K Murali Pany was a speaker at the Joint Forum on STS Best Practices held in Kuala Lumpur on 17 November 2016 by The Singapore Nautical Institute and Ikhtisas Kelautan Malaysia. Murali’s presentation highlighted the importance of carrying out legal risk management in STS operations. Particular issues covered included the legal framework of a STS transfer in Singapore, rights and obligations of the parties, vessel damage, crew safety, insurance and pollution.

Lawyers Lara Mno-3oore & Diana Ferri’s attachment with JTJB

Lawyers Lara Moore & Diana Ferri did an attachment with JTJB in November. Diana read law at the Goethe University Frankfurt and completed her Masters at King’s College London. She is an attorney with JTJB Network Partner Endermann Schmidt in Munich, Germany. Diana’s main practice areas include maritime and shipping, competition law and IP law. Lara however read law at the University of Exeter and is an associate from our fellow ADVOC firm, Ashfords LLP. Lara’s main practice areas include marine planning, licensing and regulation and is recognised as a leading marine licensing solicitor.

JTJB Wine tasting

The last Wine Tasting event for the yeano-4r was held on 09th December 2016, Friday at JTJB office. The exclusive networking event featured white wines of Saint-Aubin a small village between the 2 famous villages, Chassagne and Puligny. As for the reds, three Pinot Noir wines from 2013 with good aging potential were featured. The three reds had very different characteristics although they were from 3 villages in Burgundy right next to one another.

Two New partners for Endemann. Schmidt

JTJB Network Partner, Endemann. Schmidt will be appointing Dr. Markus Steinmetz and Dr. Konrad Maria Weber as new partners as of 01 January 2017. Markus Steinmetz (Licensed Specialist for Commercial and Corporate Law) focuses on corporate and commercial law, especially M&A/private equity transactions, restructuring and liquidation and corporate housekeeping. Konrad Weber (Licensed Specialist for Labour Law) focuses on labour law, specifically works council constitution law, trade union law, data privacy and adjoining areas.
